CEO says IPL to stay in India
New Delhi | Friday, Mar 19 2010 IST

IPL chief executive Sundar Raman today denied reports that there are proposals to hold the event overseas although he did say that the franchises were free to play frendlies outside India.

''This is Indian Premier League and will be played in India. If the IPL franchises want to play matches abroad, they are free to play frendlies,'' said Raman.

''We did have the previous edition in South Africa and it was a blessing in disguise since it unlocked an all new market for us but IPL would be held in India.

''We are happy to be back in India this year. People are coming to stadiums and there are no plans to have IPL abroad,'' Raman said at the announcement of IPL's tie-up with Topps, a global leader in sports and entertainment collectibles.

However, yesterday, IPL chairman Lalit Modi had admitted that there are proposals to play IPL outside India so as to globalise the event.

Some of the Indian players, including Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir have suffered injuries during the current season of the IPL.

But Raman refused to peg the blame on the IPL and said it was upto the players to decided where they want to play.
