Karuna upset at AIADMK MLAs coming to Assembly wearing black
Chennai | Friday, Mar 19 2010 IST

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today expressed disappointment over the opposition AIADMK members coming to the House wearing black dress when it met for a historic session in the new Assembly hall, the world's first Green Legislature building.

In a brief chat with newspersons when the House adjourned for the day after the presentation of the state's budget for 2010-11, he said it appeared that the AIADMK members were upset as their leader J Jayalalithaa lost a case in the Supreme Court.

He said the Supreme Court this morning, dismissed Ms Jayalalithaa's petition seeking to stay the proceedings of the disproportionate assets case against here her. The case is being tried before a Bangalore Court. After learning this morning that the apex court dismissed her petition and declined to stay the proceedings, the AIADMK members would have decided to come in black dress, he charged.

Asked about the state budget being silent on Centre seeking two months time on the Mullaperiyar issue, he said the issue was important, but it was unnecessary to point an accusing finger against the union government.

Stating that the Mullaperiyar issue was important as far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, the Chief Minister said his government was very firm that "we should not give up our rights and put the farmers in the southern region to hardship. This is my view", he added.

To a question, Mr Karunanidhi said the seating arrangement made for the press in the new assembly was only temporary. Soon the scribes would be provided a suitable place.
