Free dictionaries for school students

After free colour TV, free Gas stoves and free bicycles, its free dictionaries for school students.

The Tamil Nadu Government would provide free dictionaries for about ten lakh ninth standard students in the State to help them improve their English knowledge from the coming academic year. Presenting the budget for the year 2010-11, Finance Ministe K Anbazhagan said ''with a view to enabling students improve their English knowledge, about 10 lakh students studying in ninth standard in government and government-aided schools will be provided each with an "English-English-Tamil Dictionary" free of cost from the coming academic year.'' The dictionaries would be provided through the Tamil Nadu Text Book Corporation at a cost of Rs 10 crores per annum, he added. Mr Anbazhagan said with a view to ensuring uniform and quality education to all students, the DMK Government has enacted the Tamil Nadu Uniform System of Education Act. ''The common syllabus framed by the Common Board established under this Act will be taught in the coming academic year. New textbooks under the common syllabus will be introduced in first and sixth standards. In the succeeding year, common syllabus will be extended to remaining standards also'', he said.
