Raj Assembly adjourned amid scuffles, slogan shouting
Jaipur | Friday, Mar 19 2010 IST

The Rajasthan Assembly was adjourned for an hour amid scuffle between BJP members and the watch-and-ward staff even as impasse over suspension of two BJP members and censure motion against Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Kumar Dhariwal kept disrupted the House proceedings for third successive day today.

As soon as Speaker Deependra Singh Shekhawat entered the House to resume the sitting, he was greeted with slogans by BJP members who have been on the dharna in the Assembly since yesterday afternoon.

The Speaker silenced the slogan chanting and asked suspended BJP Whip Rajendra Singh Rathore to leave the House. This did not work as Mr Rathore ignored the directive.

Then Mr Shekhawat urged BJP Deputy Leader Ghanshayma Tiwari to advise his party colleague to leave the House or he would be forced to take due action to evacuate the suspended member.

Since the directive mete with vociferous slogan chanting and protests from the Opposition block, the Speaker signalled the Marshal to march in and evacuate Mr Rathore.

This led to scuffles and roughing-up between the security staff and the agitating members who had encircled Mr Rathore to prevent securitymen to catch him and remove him from the House.

In the process, several members were seen clashing with security staff and pushing them away from their benches. Some members were standing on the benches.

Amid the unruly scenes, Mr Shekhawat began with the Question Hour business and called for some questions. One question of the Industries Department was answered too. After formalising Question Hour for five minutes, the Speaker adjourned the House for an hour.

The Opposition members continued their dharna even after the adjournment.

The deadlock has been prevailing in the Assembly since Wednesday after suspension of BJP member Hanuman Beniwal following verbal duel with Mr Dhariwal and "unconstitutional passage of the budgetary demands" by the government.

The situation worsened further yesterday with the Opposition giving notice of censure motion against the Parliamentary Affairs Minister and in retaliation the ruling party moving motion for suspension of Mr Rathore for one year.
