TN presents tax-free budget
Chennai | Friday, Mar 19 2010 IST

The DMK government in Tamil Nadu today presented a tax-free budget for the year 2010-11 in the newly built Assembly complex, the first Green Building in the world.

Finance Minister K Anbazhagan presented the budget at 0930 hrs in the aesthetically decorated new assembly hall at the Government Omanthoorar Estate, which was a fulfilment of the dream of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who himself had presented more than ten budgets holding the finance portfolio when the assembly was in the historic Fort St George.

Members, cutting across partylines were in awe as they entered the new hall to take their seats. The hall resembled the Parliament hall in New Delhi with the seating arrangements in circural format.

Presenting the last full fledged budget, Mr Anbazhagan announced slashing of tax rates from 12.5 per cent to four per cent and a number of items including unbranded coffee, masala powder with branded names, ghee, vanaspathi, pickle and dry grapes.

The new complex, designed by a German firm, also signalled the return of seat of power to the Government Estate after a gap of 53 years.
