Sachin, Tiwary lead Mumbai Indians to 98-run win
New Delhi | Wednesday, Mar 17 2010 IST

Mumbai Indians rode on blistering half-centuries from Sachin Tendulkar (63) and Saurabh Tiwary (61) to beat Delhi Daredevils by 98 runs to record their second successive win in the IPL III at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground here tonight.

Chasing an imposing 219-run target, Delhi could manage just 120 for nine in 16.3 overs as their captain Gautam Gambhir could not come out to bat after he pulled a hamstring while fielding.

Both the teams now have two wins in the tournamnet so far but Daredevils have played three matches, one more than what Mumbai Indians have played.

The task for Daredevils became more difficult as opener Gautam Gambhir could not come out to bat after he went off limping from the ground in the second over of the match. The Daredevils however, began on apositive note with Virender Sehwag (26) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (17) provinding the initial impetus.

The duo added 38 runs for the opening wicket stand but Lasith Malinga broke through the defence of Dilshan whose off-stump went cart-wheeling in the fourth over.

Soon after, Sehwag also joined Dilshan at the dug-out when his attempt to go over the long-on fence could not bring the desired result and was out to Dwayne Bravo.

Bravo then got the prized wicket of Ab de Villiers (11) when the South African chopped the ball onto his stumps.

The hosts were in dire straits and half their side was back in the hut inside the first 10 overs.

Fervez Maharoof chanced his arms and was successful to some extent when he struck 17 runs in Harbhajan Singh's second over which also included a couple of sixes.

The Sri Lankan all-rounder had reached 28 but he couldn't prolong his stay at the wicket and was stumped off Jayasurya.

It was always an uphill task for the Daredevils with a mountain of 219 runs to climb and their batsmen failed to find answers to Mumbai bowlers.

Kieron Pollard, who made his IPL debut today, got his maiden wicket when he had Amit Mishra bowled for three.

The rest of the batsmen did not pose much threat to the Mumbai Indians and the hosts crumbled under pressure, well short of what visitors had posted.

Bravo, Harbhajan ans Jayasuriya picked up a couple of wickets each while Malinga and Pollard chipped in with one each.
