Arif Khan, Indian envoy in Rome, dies

India's Ambassador to Italy, Arif Khan, died in Rome early this morning (0600 hrs IST), officials said here. He was 58 and is survived by his wife, who is a lecturer, and two sons. An Indian Foreign Service (IFS) Officer of 1975 batch, Khan was suffering from cancer. He also served as India's Ambassador to Syria and Deputy Chief of Mission in Paris. He was spokesman of the External Affairs Ministry and Additional Secretary (Public Diplomacy) before taking up his present posting in Rome.
