3 held for smuggling ornamental fish, American tortoise

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials arrested three passengers who arrived from Singapore to smuggle Rs eight lakh worth ornamental fishes and green American tortoises at the International Airport here today.

Acting on a tip off, the DRI officials checked suitcases carried by the trio and found 1,500 ornamental and vastu fishes and 150 tortoises packed in polythene bag filled with water.

The passengers, identified as Mohammad, Ismail and Khaja, had gone to Singapore on a Tourist Visa. They hailed from North Chennai.

The DRI officials who seized the fishes and tortoises decided to send them back to Singapore.
