Chaitra mela starts at Deotsidh in HP
Hamirpur | Sunday, Mar 14 2010 IST

Thousands of men, women and children attired in colourful dresses visited the cave of Baba Balak Nath and sought his blessings on the opening day of the month-long Chaitra Mela (fair) which started at this historic and religious shrine in Deotsidh of this district today. Baba Balak Nath is an incarnation of Lord Kartikeya, the elder son of Lord Shiva.

Nearly 70-75 lakh people from various parts of Northern India and foreign countries were expected to take part in this annual function and offer prayers. Women offer 'puja' from a platform erected at a distance from the cave as per tradition they are not allowed to enter the cave as Babaji was a 'Brahmchari.' Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Jain offered 'puja' at the temple and also unfurled the temple flag as per the traditions. He also took part in a 'yagna' held at the temple complex. Mahant Rajinder Giri of the temple was also present on this occasion.

An official spokesman claimed that the situation at the temple remained under control and no untoward incident was reported from any part of Deotisdh town or from Dhaulgiri hill, where the shrine is located.

Meanwhile, the temple management had set up two control rooms for the benefit of the pilgrims, including providing public utility services.

Policemen and jawans of the HP Home Guards have been deployed on duty and no one is allowed to enter the temple without proper frisking.
