Srinagar | Friday, Jan 8 2010 IST

Four personnel of Jammu and Kashmir police, who took part in the Lal Chowk encounter, were given out-of-turn promotion.

Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda today ordered out of turn promotions of four police personnel to their next ranks, for exhibiting exemplary courage while tackling the situation in Lal Chowk. Mr Khoda lauded the role of the cops, who ensured safety of life and property of the people while maintaining pressure on militants during anti-militancy operations. The DGP was addressing jawans and officers at a function held at Srinagar today. The function was organised by Jammu and Kashmir Police and other security agencies to honour the jawans and officers, who took active part in combating the recent attack by militants at Lal Chowk.

The out of turn promotions to four cops of Jammu and Kashmir Police, include three Selection Grade Constables promoted as Head Constables and Sub-Inspector promoted as Inspector.

Appreciating the efforts of jawans and officers, the DGP said that the busiest markets have always remained vulnerable to militant attacks, but it was "our utmost effort to meet the challenge with great skill and patience, avoiding collateral damages and save the life and property of public".

Referring to the Lal-Chowk incident, he said, "our jawans and officers in coordination with other security agencies, exhibited exemplary courage in bringing the situation under control and ensured safe evacuation of more than 600 civilians to safer places".

He said that due to the timely action of the forces, huge properties were also saved from damage.

"Though our mission is to restore lasting peace in the State but at the same time, it remains always on our minds that least inconvenience is caused to the common people while combating militancy", he maintained.
