Attacks on students not good for India-Australia ties: Rao

Foreign Secretary Nirupama today said the violent attacks on Indian students in Australia and the climate of fear and suspicion prevailing were not good for relations between the two countries.

Describing the recent murder of Indian student in Melbourne as ''tragic'', Ms Rao said the violent incidents in Australia were a cause of grave concern to India and also to parents who were mostly middle class and sent their children there at a great cost and difficulty.

''These incidents have shaken their confidence and belief about Australia,'' she said in interview to the 'Outlook' magazine.

The Foreign Secretary said it was very very important to restore that confidence.

'' A climate of fear and suspicion is not good for the relationship between the two countries,'' she said.
