Hospital bags award

City-based Ganga Hospital has bagged the prestigious International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS) Award for extensive research and subsequent new invention in the field of spine surgery for the second time. The Award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 7.5 lakh (15,000 US Dollar) and citation would be presented during the annual meeting of ISSLS in Auckland, New Zealand in April 2010. In a press release release here today Ganga Hospital Director and Research Team Leader, Dr S Rajasekaran, said a paper on "A study of effects of in vivo mechanical forces on human lumbar discs with scoliotic disc as a biological model, results from serial post-contrast diffusion studies, Histopathology and Biochemical analysis of 21 human lumbar scoliotic discs, fetched the award. The study was successful in proposing important clinical guidelines to prevent early disc degeneration in patients with spinal deformities, he said. Dr Rajasekaran claimed the research was important as lower back pain was the most common musculoskeletal disorder in the world with a point prevalence of 30 per cent (15 to 45 per cent). As much as 90 per cent of lower back pain is due to degeneration of disc in spine where jelly-like substances provide mobility and flexibility.
