KIMS completes 50 years amid difficult times
Hubli | Saturday, Jan 2 2010 IST

The most prestigious government hospital in Hubli, Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) completed 50 years of its existence amid its rough patch. The hospital along with medical college was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister B D Jatti on 1 January, 1960 with an ambition to cater to the needs of the people wanting to avail higher treatment as well as providing medical education in North Karnataka. Begun with mere 50 beds it grew to accommodate 1,250 patients after a lapse of 50 years despite the most turbulence period it is going through. The in-take capacity of the students in KIMS is 100 with 103 students for post graduation in different faculties. The lone government medical institution of North Karnataka has witnessed the most turbulent phases in the past 50 years. Developed to treat almost all complicated diseases, KIMS has produced the top most doctors in the past. Many doctors are now in abroad brining laurels to their Alma mater.

Consisting of senior most faculties in college and the best possible doctors to treat the patients, KIMS has almost all modern facilities including Kath lab, Coronary angio, angio plasty, balloon angio plasty, and such other medical treatment. A trauma centre is being built and is likely to be opened in a short time.

The institution also faced several ignominious incidents including the shooting at Medical Superintendent and some scandals from the past few years. There were attempts to indict the then Director of KIMS who was arrested for 35 days and then absolved from the allegation by the CoD. Several such incidents inflicted damage to the institution.

Despite of being an autonomous institution it was always looked upon as a government institution. Shortage of drugs, beds, bad treatment, bad maintenance of sanitation, shortage of doctors and scarcity of funds continued at KIMS. Even now it has to look towards the government for financial help.

A Rs 100 crores project was submitted to the government four years ago and the then government also agreed in principle to implement the project. But due to some upheavals in KIMS the project could not be totally materialised.
