DGP promises peaceful, smooth New Year celebrations

Promising peaceful and smooth new year celebrations in the state, Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) R R Girish Kumar today said the police would come down heavily on the people who would take law into their hands in the name of agitations, 'rasta rokos' and bandhs and curb the fundamental rights of the people.

Addressing a press conference along with Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) A K Khan here, he said the police would take all measures to ensure that new year celebrations were held in the state in a peaceful and smooth way.

Regarding call by some section of the agitators to boycott new year celebrations in the city, the DGP said no one had the right to curb the rights of others. ''They have no right to impose restrictions on the celebrations and the police will take severe action against the persons who disrupt new year celebrations at various places in the city,'' he added.

He said the police would provide security at various venues in the city and other areas and people could celebrate new year wherever they like. The DGP said he had instructed his officers to firmly deal with agitators, who resort to violence and disrupt vehicle movement in the city and other areas, affecting the normal life of the common people.

He said because of 'rail rokos' and 'rasta rokos', the goods transportation from one area to other was getting badly affected, leading to increase in the prices of essential commodities and affecting the state's economy.

Mr Kumar warned the agitators not to take the police for granted as the force was capable of meeting any threat on law and order.

Police had no objection if the agitators achieve their demands in a peaceful manner but they should not indulge in violence and create law and order problems, he said.

He said Chief Minister K Rosaiah had already stated that the revenues of the state were getting affected and the investors were not willing to come to the state to set up their units in view of the ongoing agitation in the state.
