Gulmarg cable car now major tourist attraction
Gulmarg | Wednesday, Dec 30 2009 IST

The Gandola Cable Car (GCC), taking guests to Kongdori and Apharwat heights, has now become a major tourist attraction across the globe.

Tickets for GCC would be available at Srinagar International Airport (SIA) and Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) here while the centre has agreed to finance for planting new trees in the corridor which was affected due to construction of cable car.

Tourists planning to visit Kashmir are now making inquiries from us if the GCC would be operative when they visit the world famous ski resort, Managing Director (MD) of the Jammu and Kashmir State Cable Car Corporation (SCCC) Limited Farooq Khan said.

However, he said, Gulmarg has its own importance and known world over for its beauty, snow slopes and golf course. But, he said, GCC is one of the added attraction for tourists--locals, domestic and International.

Mr Khan said in foreign countries the ropeway cars are being used only during winter. The skiers are using the ropeway cars to reach heights from where they down, he said.

He added in Gulmarg the GCC has become all weather attraction for tourists.

He said during last financial year, the GCC earned a revenue of Rs 8 crore against the expenditure of Rs 7 crore, having a net profit of Rs one crore.

He described Gulmarg as crown and GCC as its jewel. But, he said, Gulmarg, 50 km from summr capital of the state, Srinagar, is a place where three some of romance, beauty and snow dwell together.

It is said that it was an english hotel owner who discovered the meadow of flowers in 1870 which was later developed by King Yousuf Shah Chak for Kashmir's melody queen and his beloved wife Habba Khaitoon.

We are receiving phone calls and e-mails from tourists who wanted to know if the GCC would be operating on particular date they intend to visit here, he said adding this shows the popularity of the GCC.

He said tickets for GCC would now be available at SIA and TRC and those who intend to avail the facility can purchase tickets from these counters.
