Several J&K employees not paying income tax: IT Commissioner
Jammu | Saturday, Dec 5 2009 IST

Several employees of Jammu and Kashmir government evade tax deductions as they do not possess Permanent Account Number (PAN), the Income Tax Commissioner said here today.

Expressing serious concern, Income Tax Commissioner B L Razdan said, ''Many government employees in the state have not acquired PAN even as they receive taxable salaries.' The Commissioner, who had also taken up this matter with the ChiefSecretary, was apprehensive that in the absence of PAN, income tax might not be getting deducted from the salaries of such government employees.

Further, Mr Razdan said, ''As many as 350 DDOs (drawing and disbursing officers) of the State government do not file TDS return as a result of which it becomes impossible to give credit of prepaid taxes to the deductees.'' He appealed to the people in general and the tax-payers in particular to comply with the provisions of tax laws and avoid unpleasant consequences. He asked the tax-payers to pay the advance tax over the coming week to help the department achieve the targets set before it.

''Although the collection of direct taxes has improved over the corresponding period of the preceding financial year, there is a lot of scope for improvement'' he said.
