RTI Act fetches over 93,000 applications
Raipur | Saturday, Dec 5 2009 IST

Chhattisgarh's Information Commissioner A K Vijay Verghese has said that more than 93,000 applications were received by different government departments in the state so far under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Of these, information had been provided to the applicants in about 87,000 cases, while 6,000-odd applications were pending for disposal, Mr Verghese said.

Speaking at a departmental review meeting at Dantewada in the South Bastar region yesterday, he said a total of 5,778 complaints were registered with the State Information Commission regarding violation of the Act and delay in furnishing information to the applicant.

The commission had disposed off 3,310 complaints and taken punitive action in 119 cases resulting in realisation of Rs.4,42,000 as fine. Besides, compensation to the tune of Rs.3,52,000 were awarded in 964 cases.

Stating that the RTI Act was virtually a tool in the hands of the common people to bring about transparency, accountability and to check corruption in government departments, Mr Verghese directed the district authorities to launch a campaign through posters, pamphlets and hoardings with a view to making people aware of the Act.
