4 killed, 24 injured in truck-bus collision

Four women devotees were killed and 24 other bus passengers were injured, 14 of them seriously, when a truck hit the mini-bus they were travelling in near Pathankot by-pass at Jalandhar-Amritsar national highway about five km from here this morning.

The deceased have been identified as Usha Rani, Banso Devi, Santosh Kumari and a 12-year-old girl Preeti, all residents of Ludhiana. Of the injured, condition of 14 people was said to be critical and they had been referred to DNC and CMC at Ludhiana. Harjinder Singh, who lost his wife Usha Rani in the accident said that about 30 devotees, mostly the residents of Ludhiana, were on their way in a mini bus to Dera Radha Swami at Beas to take part in the weekly discourse programme. As soon the bus reached the traffic lights signal chowk in Pathankot by-pass, a speedy truck loaded with sand and bajri collided head-on with the bus resulting in instant death of three women and a girl child. Ten of the injured devotees were discharged after they were provided with first aid while the seriously injured 14, identified as Sudesh Rani, Komal, Tilaki, Kamlesh,Jyoti, Neha, Parkash Kaur, Harjider Singh, Pawan Kumar, Punewet, Ratna, Jagdish, Kamla and Sat Pal had been referred to Ludhiana hospitals.

Police have registered a case against the driver of the truck.
