J&K Gujjars for separate Gojri channel on DD

Expressing resentment over no attention to Gojri language on Doordarshan channel, the Jammu and Kashmir Gujjars today demanded a separate channel in the language.

''Gojri is one of the significant languages of the country and it needs special attention and encouragement from the Government of India,'' Javed Rahi, national secretary of Gujjars Association said in his address during Gojri Writers Meet organised by the Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation here.

Mr Rahi said Gojri is being ignored by DD channel and it should be taken into consideration.

''A delegation of Gojri writers had met with Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni in Srinagar in October and demanded that the DD Rajouri be made functional on priority and should be declared 'DD Gojri' immediately but nothing concrete emerged,'' the Gujjar leader said, adding that a delegation would also visit the national capital in December to pursue the case.

He further added that the Centre has allocated more than Rs 400 crore this year for DD channels in J&K but it is astonishing that it does not telecast even a single daily programme in Gojri -- the language of Gujjars.

''The Gujjars and Bakerwals -- the speakers of Gojri language -- constitutes more than 20 per cent population of the state and, thus, completely being ignored by the DD in the state,'' alleged Mr Rahi.
