India Bill to ensure 50 % women quota in panchayats introduced in LS
The UPA government today introduced in Lok Sabha a Constitution Amendment Bill to raise the quota of women reservation in panchayats to 50 per cent from the existing 33 per cent for further empowering them. The Constitution(108th Amendment)Bill,2009 was moved by Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister CP Joshi for amending Article 243D of the Constitution. When legislated, the new law will provide 50 per cent reservation to women in Panchayats and also in the offices of its chairpersons. The office of chairperson would, however, be rotated among different panchayats but the overall 50 per cent quota will be maintained. But within the 50 per cent reservation quota, the Bill also provides for reservation of seats and the office of chairperson for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in proportion to their respective population in states so as to make the Panchayati Raj institutions more inclusive. -- (UNI) -- 26PAR15.xml
