Minor girl undergoes rare epilepsy surgery
Bangalore | Wednesday, Nov 25 2009 IST

Narayana Multi Speciality Hospital here has successfully performed an epilepsy surgery on a two-year-old girl.

Thoisana Devi from Manipur had fits right from third day of her life. The child, otherwise developing normally, was playful and picking up to speak. But, because of very frequent seizures occurring several times in a day, she was unable to walk and developed weakness on the right side of her body. Since the fits were not responding to multiple anti epileptic medications, she was taken up for epilepsy surgery. Unlike the common epilepsy surgery, the child was needed a more sophisticated and technically challenging surgery to disconnect the entire left hemisphere. Previously surgeons abroad were doing hemispherectomy in such instances, which had several complications, according to a release here today.

Thoisana was subjected to a modified procedure called functional hemisphereotomy wherein through a small hole in the skull, the entire left hemisphere was disconnected from the rest of the brain.

The operation was done by a team of neurosurgeons led by Dr Thimappa Hegde and Dr Komal Prasad. The patients seizures stopped after the surgery and the right sided weakness has started improving and she was able to speak a couple of words. Dr Hegde said ''this is probably one of the youngest patients in our country to undergo such a surgery. The entire evaluation and surgery were done free of cost as her parents were poor. The surgery was undertaken as part of National Epilepsy week programme. We are sure this will make a big impact on Thoisanas life and her parents.''
