Road Safety committee to create traffic awareness

A high level committee of Vyttila-Mannuthy National Highway Sector of Road Safety Authority convened by Transport Minister Jose Thettayil at the Government Guest House here this evening decided to strengthen the Engineering section, create awareness of traffic rules among vehicle operators, students and pedestrians and implement the proposal in a time bound manner. Mr Thettayil said that Vyttila-Mannoothy stretch would be divided into small sectors after identifying the accident prone area. Each sector would be provided with 15 numbers of Speed detection Cameras, Speed Radars and alcometres. Signal lamps will be erected in important junctions and fault free functioning of the same would be ensured. The expenses for the same would be met from the Road Safety Authority Fund. The authority allotted Rs 24 crores for the implementation of various proposals.

The Minister said action would be strictly taken against drivers who refuse to dim headlight of the speeding vehicles during night. No arches would be allowed to display across the NH. The over loading of students in auto rickshaws would be discouraged in the first phase. Police and Motor Vehicle Personnel in the second phase would initiate action if overloading was repeated. Wearing helmet and seat belt would be enforced strictly.

A committee headed by Ernakulam IGP Vinson M Paul and NATPAK, Road Safety Engineering, Dy Transport Commissioner as members would be constituted for the implementation of the proposal.

The NHAI would set up signboards indicating the speed limit and make Zebra Crossings clearly. Adequate Ambulance vans would be provided by Health Department. The service of voluntary organizations would be sought for making awareness of Traffic Rules.

The anomalies in construction of NH and the defects of the Road Engineering Department were brought to the notice of NHAI.

MLAs A M Yousef and K Babu, District Collector M Beena, Transport Commissioner Premshanker, ADGP Chandrasekhar, IGs B Sandya, Mohemed Yasin and Vinson Paul were also present at the meeting.
