Simarjit Kaur becomes fastest runner

Simarjit Kaur of Jalandhar became the fastest runner by winning the 100 metres dash by clocking 12.42 seconds in the Punjab State Games for Women which got off to a flying start at the Guru Nanak Stadium here today. Harpreet Kaur of Sangrur won silver in 12.67 seconds whereas Amandeep Kaur of Mukatsr got bronze in 12.89 seconds. Harpreet Kaur of Ludhiana bagged gold in 400 metres hurdles clocking 1:01.3. Anju Rani of Jalandhar won silver medal in 1:02.37. Satwant Kaur of Hoshiarpur got bronze in 1:03.36. In high jump Neha Gaikwad of Amritsar cleared the bar placed at 1.45 metres and clinched gold, Harpreet Kaur of Fatehgarh Sahib won silver with 1.37 metres and Virdeep Kaur of Ferozepur got bronze who cleaered 1.35 metres. Manpreet Kaur of Jalandhar bagged gold in 800 metres clocking 2:14.32. Sapinder Kaur of Fatehgarh Sahib won silver in 2:23.65 and Rajvir Kaur of Ludhiana secured bronze in 2:26.04. Earlier, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal inaugurated the Games. As many as 1700 participants took part in the march past.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Badal, who also holds the sports portfolio, said the Punjab Government would soon introduce a new sports policy for the upliftment of sports. He stressed on the Catch them Young scheme. He advised the youth to refrain themselves from taking drugs.

Punjab Secretary Sports PS Aujla welcomed the chief guest. Punjab Sports Director Padam Shree Pargat Singh thanked the chief guest and distinguished guests. Results: Basketball (1st round): Mansa bt Bathinda 56-38, Faridkot bt Frozepur 55-6, Amritsar bt Gurdaspur 66-39, Roop Nagar bt Mukatsar 58-40, Patiala bt Hoshiarpur 55-42, Kapurthala bt Mohali 80-67.

Badminton (1st round): Jalandhar bt Ferozepur 2-0, S.B.S Nagar bt S.A.S Nagar 2-0, Hoshiarpur bt Mukatsar 2-0. Handball: Roop Nagar bt Kapurthala 19-3, Faridkot bt Gurdaspur 10-1, Patiala bt Mukatsar 10-2, Hoshiarpur bt S.A.S Nagar 17-10, Tarn Taran bt Ferozepur 9-1, Ludhiana bt S.B.S Nagar 18-6.
