61.33 pc polling in Civic bodies polls in Rajasthan
Jaipur | Monday, Nov 23 2009 IST

A tentative 61.33 per cent of 56.60 lakh voters exercised their franchise today to elect representatives to 46 civic bodies, including Municipal Corporations in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Kota.

The polling which began at 0800 hrs at 6,002 polling booths spread across 24 districts passed off peacefully at 1700 hrs. The voting began at a sedate note this morning, but gained tempo as the day advanced.

Tension prevailed for a short while in ward number 14 in Bikaner town following firing in the air, by a miscreant. However, police officials later claimed that the incident had nothing to do with the polling. No body was hurt in the incident. Supporters of former Minister Yunus Khan and some rival Congress workers clashed at a polling booth in Girls' College in Deedwana town of Nagaur district.

Mr Khan was also roughed up, his supporters alleged. Cross cases have been lodged at the police station in this connection, police said.

Elsewhere, polling passed off smoothly and peacefully.

The polling today has locked fate of 270 candidates, including 107 women, who are in the fray for election as Mayors, President or Chairperson in 46 local bodies, where as many as 6,179 candidates including 2733 women, are contesting for election as ward members in 1612 wards.

As many as 19 ward members have already been declared elected unopposed, State Election Commission spokesman said.

This is for the first time that the election to Mayors or Presidents and Chairpersons in these local bodies is being held through direct ballot.

The Counting of votes will be held on November 26.
