Int'l conf calls for legalising traditional healthcare systems

Healers, traditional health practitioners and policy makers from 18 countries have called upon all governments to legalise traditional healthcare systems and integrate them into official national healthcare systems, it was declared here today.

Addressing mediapersons, Mr G Hariramamurthi, coordinator, International Healers' Conference and Mr Wim Hiemstra, coordinator of COMPAS (comparing and supporting endogenous development), The Netherlands, stated that the conference recommended the building the capacity of local communities to develop biocultural protocols (BCPs) and set their own terms for access and benefit sharing in academic and commercial research.

The conference also called for supporting research and documentation on the safety, efficacy, quality, underlying theories, non-pharmacological approaches of traditional healthcare systems and establishing a Permanent Forum on Traditional Health Practitioners at the United Nations to work closely with the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII).

The International Healers' Conference on promotion of traditional medicine for sustainable healthcare and International policy workshop was held in Bangalore from November 19-22.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Hiemstra said the conference emphasised on local solutions for global problems and brought together 200 delegates representing healers, traditional health practitioners, researchers and policy makers from 18 countries.

COMPAS (comparing and supporting endogenous development) is an international network implementing field programmes to develop, test and improve endogenous development (ED) methodologies.
