Police lathicharge JNU students
New Delhi | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

Police today resorted to lathicharge after students in the prestigious JNU pelted stones on them, following refusal by the police to hand over to them some miscreants, found indulging in drinking in the campus.

According to sources, three men had come in a car in the afternooon and after being found drinking and misbehaving with girls by the security staff, were asked to leave the campus premises.

However, the miscreants while leaving, threatened the security staff with a pistol, following which they were nabbed and the police called.

The JNU security staff also lodged a FIR against them at the Vasantkunj police station.

After the police arrived, a student crowd gathered, asking them to hand over the culprits to them. The police refused to do so and there was stone pelting on them by the gathered crowd.

After this, the police resorted to a mild lathicharge to bring the situation under control. Some police men and some students were injured in the incident.

No arrests from the crowd have been made so far, according to official sources.
