Orissa Minister's nephews arrested for anti-social activity
Sambalpur | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

Orissa Tribal Welfare Minister Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha has again been embroiled in a controversy over activities of his nephews. The Minister's nephew, working with the Orissa police, has been dismissed from job just three days back for anti-social activity, including alleged rape of a schedule caste girl. For the Minister the matter did not end here. His other two nephews were arrested at Paikmal in Bargarh district, 130 km from here, yesterday for allegedly assaulting a woman and another villager.

For family members and their misdeeds, Mr Bariha has earned sufficient bad names locally and all over the state.

In the first case, his nephew Kunal Singh Bariha got involved in a gang rape case of a schedule caste girl of Bukuramunda village on May 10 this year.

Kunal and five others, including Paikmal block Chairman Mahesh Agrawal, were involved in this heinous crime. Since then, Kunal was absconding from his native place to avoid arrest. The Orissa High Court had asked Kunal to surrender but he did not do so. Finally, he has been dismissed from the job and police is in search of him for arrest. Another ugly episode reported when two other Minister's nephews -- Surya Narayan Singh Bariha alias Goldi and Akshaya Bariha -- attacked and injured innocent people in different places near their village. A woman of Bodsambar village and another mason of Salepali had lodged separate FIRs with Paikmal Police Station alleging the atrocity by the Minister's nephews on them. ''The police, on the basis of the complaints, arrested Goldi and Akshaya. Since their bail petitions were rejected, they were remanded to judicial custody,'' Paikmal police said.
