India Pankaj stunned, Yasin moves into last 16, Chitra, Meenal out
Shock defeat of former world champion and India's title hope Pankaj Advani marked an eventful eighth day at ONGC-IBSF World Snooker Championship 2009 being held at Hyderabad International Convention Centre here today. The jaw dropping result of the day was undoubtedly the loss of one of the top contenders and local favourite Pankaj Advani of India who was shown the door by Cypruss Anthony Brabin as he secured a 5-3 victory over his much celebrated opponent. Brabin rose like a phoenix from the Ashes against his previous match with Sourav Kothari of India after having trailed 1-3, going on to win the encounter by 4 frames to 3. He carried the similar form this morning and immediately made Pankaj aware of his intentions when he won the first frame after trailing by 59 points. Pankaj showing great grit and determination lived up to his billing of performing under pressure and managed to bag 2 frames after trailing 1-4. In the eight frame (with the scores 4-3 in favour of Brabin) Pankaj who was trailing by 09-59 showed signs of making a comeback but was halted by an exceptional pot pulled off by Brabin along with top side cushion followed by the black and sealing victory against the dismayed faces of the Indian supporters. The Indian challenge kept falling like 9 pins as Manan Chandra and Aditya Mehta lost their matches to Anthony McGill of Scotland and Gavin Pantall of Wales respectively. The only ray of hope in the mens section was provided by exceptional display of cuemanship by Yasin Merchant, Kamal Chawla and Lucky who won their respective matches proceeded to the Top-16 stage. In the womens section, there was little to cheer about with Chitra M. and Meenal Thakur both crashing out in the quarter final of the ladies event losing their matches against. -- (UNI) -- 22SPD39.xml
