Chennai | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

The trough of low pressure over the South West bay, which lay centred over Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu coasts, now lies over South West bay over Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining Sri Lanka.

A bulletin from weather office here said the North East monsoon was still active over South Tamil Nadu and under the influence of the low pressure, rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at many places over South Tamil Nadu during the next 24 hours.

Moderate to rather heavy rain is likely to occur at many places over all the districts of Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli, Tuticorin and Kanyakumari districts of South Tamil Nadu, it said. Light to moderate rain is also likely to occur at a few places over all the districts of North Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry, the bulletin said.

Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur over South Tamil Nadu during 24 hours, it warned. The city and its suburbs would be partly cloudy and there would be possibility of rain or thundershowers in some areas, the bulletin said. S R Ramanan, Director, Regional Meteorological centre said the rains would recede after November 24.

During the past 24 hours, Orathanadu recorded highest rainfall of 11 cm, followed by Peravurani 8 cm and Tiruppuvanam (all Thanjavur district) 6 cm, Cuddalore, Sathankulam and Tiruchendur (both Tuticorin district) 5 cm each, the bulletin added.
