India 16.67 mln mobile users added in October: TRAI
The country's mobile operators added a record 16.67 million subscribers in October 2009, taking the total subscriber base to 488.4 million for the month, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The country added 16.67 million mobile subscribers on GSM, CDMA and FWP combined. Tata Teleservices, in which Japan's NTT DoCoMo holds 26 per cent stake, added 3.87 million new users in October 2009 followed by Vodafone signing up 2.98 million users, Bharti Airtel 2.7 million users, Reliance Communications 2.10 million, Aircel 2.02 million and Idea Cellular 1.90 million users. State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd added 0.68 million and 58,210 users respectively in October this year, TRAI said in a statement. The total telephone subscriber base in the country, including fixed-line phones, stood at 525.65 million at the end of October, whereas it was 509.03 million in September, a growth of 3.26 per cent. However, the wireline subscriber base witnessed a decline of 0.05 million at 37.25 million in October from 37.31 million in September, data showed. With this, the overall tele-density, that is mobile connections per 100 people, touched 44.87 per cent, whereas wireless tele-density stood at 41.69 for the month. Total broadband subscriber base in the country increased by 2.49 per cent to 7.4 million in October from 7.22 million in previous month, TRAI said.
