PHRC member unsatisfied with condition of jails in Punjab
Hoshiarpur | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

During his recent visit to various government offices and institutions particularly jails, police stations, schools and colleges, Punjab Human Right Commission (PHRC) member Avinash Rai Khanna found loopholes in the working of the staff at these places, which also lacked the necessary infrastructure.

Talking to mediapersons here today, Mr Khanna said in most of the police stations there was not only acute shortage of staffbut also lack of proper infrastructure. Buildings of many of the police stations were in dilapidated condition. Even civic amenities like toilets and proper sitting arrangement for the visitors were not available, he added.

Mr Khanna had yesterday visited the civil hospital, Jalandhar and found ailing undertrails in chains. He had then pulled up the concerened jail officials.

According to Mr Khanna, all the jails in the state were overcrowded, housing almost double the number of prisoners against the prescribed capacity. Many of the watch towers in some of the jails were without security guards, he added.
