PDK activists held for attempting to show black flag to Minister
Coimbatore | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

Police arrested about 20 activists of Periyar Dravida Kazhagam (PDK), when they attempted to show black flag to Union Minister of state for Forest and Environment Jairam Ramesh, accusing him of being biased in favour of Kerala on the Mullaperiyar Dam issue.

Led by Kazhagam General Secretary K Ramakrishnan, the activists, holding black flags, assembled near the Central Theatre in the town when police arrested them.

They raised slogans against Mr Ramesh, alleging that he had done injustice to Tamil Nadu on the issue, by allowing Kerala to undertake a survey for the building of new dam, near the existing dam, ignoring the protests by Tamil Nadu Government.

Mr Ramesh was here in connection with his visit to Sali Ali Centre for Orinthology and Natural History and this was his first visit to Tamil Nadu after he passed the controversial order, allowing Kerala to undertake the survey.

The ruling DMK had announced that it would hold a protest meeting against Mr Ramesh for passing the order, despite Chief Minister M Karunanidhi pointing out that the matter was subjudice and asking the Minister to take Tamil Nadu into confidence before issuing any order.

The Chief Minister was to address the protest meeting in Madurai early this month, but the meeting was cancelled.
