Kashmir a 'political issue', NC ready to play role to resolve
Srinagar | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

Describing Kashmir as a ''political issue'' which has to be resolved through dialogue process, the ruling National Conference (NC) in Jammu and Kashmir said it was ready to play a positive role for settlement of various issues.

This statement of Minister for Rural Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Ali Mohammad Sagar came few days after a senior NC leader said ''pre-1953 position'' could be made basis for any talks on Kashmir issue.

Mr Sagar assured that the NC will play pivotal role in settlement of ''Kashmir issue''.

Our party has always played a positive role for settlement of various issues and always pleaded the cause of Kashmiri people before various fora,'' the Minister said at a public meeting at Hygam in Baramulla district of north Kashmir yesterday.

Referring to the recent statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Mr Sagar said, ''we believe that Kashmir is not an economic problem but a political one, which can be resolved through the process of dialogue between various parties. He said, ''we have to take concrete measures to address this issue and in this regard NC will play role of facilitator.'' Mr Sagar claimed that it is recorded history that NC has always resorted to people friendly measures so that the people of the state do not suffer.

Demanding that ''Kashmir issue'' should be resolved to the satisfaction of all, senior ruling National Conference (NC) leader and former minister Dr Mustafa Kamal, however, said ''pre-1953'' position could be made basis for any dialogue process.

Dr Kamal, MLA, uncle of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, said that because of the Kashmir issue, people in the entire sub-continent are facing problems and uncertainty.
