First phase of Assembly poll slated on Nov 25

Four former ministers, six former MPs and a former Speaker are among the 470 candidates in the first leg of the five-phase polling to 26 Assembly seats out of the total 81 scheduled to be held on November 25 in Jharkhand.

The 82-member Jharkhand Assembly includes one nominated member.

During the Assembly elections in 2005, 13 of these seats were bagged by BJP while JMM got six, Congress three, JD-U two and one each went to All India Forward Bloc and Rashtriya Janta Dal.

Former minister and BJP state president Raghubar Das is fighting from Jamshedpur East while former HRD minister Pradeep Yadav, during the Arjun Munda-led in NDA government, is the first time contender from Godda on Jharkhand Vikash Morcha (Prajatantrik) candidate.

JD(U) state president and former minister Jaleshwar Mahto is a party candidate from Baghmara, former Land and Revenue Minister in the Madhu Koda-led government Dulal Bhuyian is a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha(JMM) candidate from Jugsalai while former Speaker Alamgir Alam is contesting polls as a Congress candidate to retain his Pakur Assembly seat.

Among former MPs, Congress leader Thomas Hansda, a two-time Parliamenterian is contesting from Rajmahal while another former MP of Congress Furkan Ansari is contesting from Jamtara Assembly seat.

Hemlal Murmu, former MP from Rajmahal is contesting from Barhate as a JMM candidate while Simon Marandi and Suraj Mandal(all JMM) are in the fray from Litipara and Poreyahat Assembly seats.
