Another round of battle of ballots in UP
Lucknow | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

After Samajwadi party's defeat in the just concluded by-polls on 11 assembly and one Lok Sabha seats, now the parties are preparing themselves for another round of battle of ballots for 36 seats of Local Authority constituencies in the Uttar Pradesh State Legislative Council next month.

Election to these seats is expected to be held in the last week of December as the tenure of the present term of the members expires on January 15, 2010.

The election to chose the representatives to the upper house of the state legislature by the local bodies had always witnessed the supremacy of the ruling party in the state and this time too it would not be much different.

In the last 2006 elections for these seats, the Mulayam Singh Yadav led Samajwadi party had bagged the maximum of 24 seats during their regime. Rest was won by BJP-7 seats, RLD-2 Congress-1 and one each by SJP and Independent. The ruling BSP now, taking a lead had announced candidates of most of the seats with giving preference to the relatives and near and dears one of the party leaders. Congress had also released candidates name for some of the seats while the SP and BJP are still waiting for the Election Commission to announce the dates of the elections.

After January 15 next, the ruling BSP, which is in minority in the upper house at present, is likely to emerge as the largest party surpassing the SP which has presently 35 members against the 22 of the BSP.

After BSP came to power with full majority in the assembly in 2007 had to face embarrassment several time as the upper house had rejected the bills passed by the lower house. Several controversial bills had to be approved by the assembly for the second time to avoid confrontation with the legislative council.

Presently in the 100 member legislative council the strength of other parties are BJP -17,Congress -3, RLD-5, Teachers Group-9, SJP-1 and Independent- 5.

Three seats are vacant.
