India SWR to install escalators at Mysore Railway Station
As part of its efforts to modernise the Railway system, the South Western Railway (SWR) will soon be installing escalators at Mysore Railway station to facilitate easy movement of passengers from one platform to another. Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anup Dayanand told UNI today that the work of replacing the wooden steps at platform with escalators would be taken up a cost of Rs 30 lakh. The work was expected to commence in a week and would be completed by the end of March 31, 2010. As the electric escalators were based on 'Censor Technology', as soon as the commuters would arrive, the doors would start opening and as soon as they would climb the first step, it would start moving upwards automatically. The steps would be stationery when there would be no people. A large quantity of fuel would be saved through this technology, he said, adding around 30 passengers could use the escalator at a time with luggage. However, there would be normal steps at the either side of the escalator, he added. Dr Dayanand said the installation was the first of its kind in South Western Railway. Except Nizamuddin Station, New Delhi, and Egmore Station, Chennai, no other Railway station in the country was equipped with such a facility, he claimed, adding in the last Railway Budget, grants were allotted for installing escalators to 50 Railway stations across the country. Though, Mysore Railway station was not included in that list, in order to provide better facilities to Rail commuters, the project was being implemented at the station too, he said. The SWR had come forward to implement 12 new projects at an estimated cost of Rs three crore during the current financial year, he said, adding the projects included installation of Electronic Train Indicator Board, Digital Reservation Chart Display, High-mast Tower, Air-conditioned Dormitories and Touch Screen Enquiry Terminal. He said the ''Jana Aahar'' scheme, aimed at providing quality food at reasonable prices to Rail commuters, would be introduced in the City Railway Station in February 2010. -- (UNI) -- 22MS6.xml
