Authorities join hands to check illegal transportation of animals
Mysore | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

The Animal Husbandry authorities in the border districts of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu have joined hands to check illegal transportation of cattle in order to prevent spread of diseases in domestic animals.

Animal Husbandry Department sources told UNI today that there was rise in the number of cases of illegal movement of cattle, including the sick ones, between Karnataka and Kerala.

The Animal Husbandry Department officials in the districts of Mysore, Chamarajanagara, Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka, Erode and Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu and Wayanand, Kasaragod and Kannur in Kerala had prepared an action plan to stall illegal movement of the domestic animals in the regions.

Deputy Directors of Animal Husbandry Department of the border districts, in a meeting held here recently, resolved to coordinate and work towards controlling outbreak of diseases by increasing the surveillance on the borders. They also decided to prepare a contingency plan in case of outbreak of diseases on the border. On the basis of the views of the officers in the meeting, Bangalore-based Southern Region Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (SRDDL) Director Renuka Prasad made a presentation to the Centre.

As the borders of the three states were covered by forests and possibilities of the spread of infection from domestic animals to wild animals during transit could be high, the authorities decided to urge the Centre to set up check posts on the borders and post a veterinary doctor to verify animal's movement and screen them for diseases, the sources added.
