Ludhiana | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

The Punjab Agricultural University is creating awareness among farmers on medicinal and aromatic plants even as the cultivated area for these plants goes up to 5,000 hectares in the state.

Research on medicinal and aromatic plants has been underway at the University since 1973 and the scientific efforts led to the standardisation of technology has made the cultivation of Mentha, a medicinal and aromatic plant, popular in the state.

The herbal garden at the University showcases more than 100 medicinal and aromatic plants for the education of students and visitors. This collection is expected to be further strengthened by bringing more accessions from across the country. An inter-disciplinary team of scientists is also carrying out studies on these plants.

Head Department of Agronomy Dr U S Walia said here today the farmers are being made aware about medicinal and aromatic plants through appropriate means and it had helped enhancing the cultivated area to 5,000 hectares of which Mentha occupies the largest area. The commonly grown medicinal and aromatic plants in the state include mentha, turmeric, celery, aloe vera, fennel, dilseed, coriander, fenugreek, stevia, white musli, ashavganda, Dr Walia added.
