Insurance scheme for apple and mango growers of HP Shimla | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST
Himachal Pradesh government has decided to provide insurance cover to mango and apple growers of the state. Horticulture activities are playing dominant role in the transformation of rural economy by contributing significantly in the State Gross Domestic Product. The state government has taken special steps in order to boost fruit production. Official figures avaliable here today confirmed a recorded 6.28 lakh tonne fruit production in the year 2008-09. The government is taking effective measures to strengthen economic base of the fruit growers. From this year, on pilot basis, crop insurance scheme for apple and mango has been started to provide the horticulturists the much needed support in case of crop failure. This weather based insurance scheme has been introduced on pilot basis in Theog, Jubbal, Narkanda, Rohru and Chirgaon blocks of Shimla district and Ani block of Kullu district for apple crop. While for the mango crop it cover Fatehpur, Nurpur, Indora and Nagrota Surian blocks of Kangra district. The Agriculture Insurance Company of India will be the implementation agency of this scheme as decided by the government. Fifty per cent of the total premium would be borne by the insured growers and rest of the 50 per cent by the Central and State governments in equal proportion. Chilling requirement, temperature fluctuations, deficit or excess rainfall are some of the weather perils which this scheme covers for apple crop.
