Actors do not have anything in their hands: Manoj Pahwa
New Delhi | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

Stressing that the audience and the media calls the shots, theatre, television and film actor Manoj Pahwa said an actor does not have anything in his hands.

''We do not always choose movies out of choice. Whatever performance we give are given certain label by the audiences and the media,'' the actor said while interacting with UNI at the inaugural day of the global festival of documentary films in Noida on November 20.

Pahwa, who has performed in all three mediums of television, films and theatre said, ''I was labelled a comedian because I am fat and and now I have an image.'' Pahwa, who has given memorable performances in films like 'Being Cyrus', 'Singh Is King', 'Tum Bin', 'Life in a Metro' and 'Aloo Chaat' said,''though I realise the shortcomings of being trapped in an image, I enjoy doing comedy.'' The actor, best remembered for his portrayal of the lazy Mr Bhatia in TV serial 'Office Office, added, ''When I came to Bombay, my survival was the larger question. Actors accept a few roles just for survival. It is only later that people know you.'' When quizzed about his future projects, Pahwa informed that he will be seen in David Dhawan's John Abraham-starrer 'Hook Ya Crook'.

When asked about his experience in theatre, he said he had just performed 'Shatranj Ke Khiladi' and plays based on Ismat Chughtai's stories for Naseeruddin Shah's Motley Theatre Group.'' Advising strugglers who dream to make it big in tinsel town, the actor stressed, ''People usually think they can act and it is easy.

but it is not so.'' ''Training in acting and related aspects of film-making always helps and one should realise that everyone cannot become Amitabh Bachchan,'' he advised.

In an interaction with UNI, director of spoofs like 'Malegaon Ke Supermen' and 'Malegaon Ki Sholay' Shaikh Nasir said, ''Directing such movies with local actors started out as a joke for me. I never realised I would make it so big.'' 'Malegaon Ki Sholay', made on a budget of Rs 50,000 managed to rake in Rs two lakh. The director, who had humble beginnings as the owner of a video parlour added, ''I learnt direction by watching movieas and plan to stay back in my village in Malegaon and make more such spoofs.

A recent documentary by debutante filmmaker Faiza Khan on the making of 'Malegaon Ke Supermen' has won awards at international film festivals like Asiatica Film Mediale in Rome, Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles and Karachi Film Festival.
