Survey planned to locate new archaeological sites
Jagdalpur | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

The Department of Culture and Archaeology has decided to take up a survey to locate archaeology sites on the banks of four rivers of the state.

Official sources here yesterday said the Department could carry out the surveys on the banks of Mahanadi, Indravati, Kalo and Araf rivers to locate sites, where ancient civilisations could have existed. The survey would be carried out by a team of archaeologists and historians.

The entire survey would take three years to complete. There had been surveys carried out earlier on the banks of Mahanadi and Shivnath rivers in the state. The tribal habitat on the banks of IndraVati river near Bastar had been recorded as a site which had a well-developed tribal culture during the ancient times.

As per the historians, there had been tribal habitats existing on the banks of Indravati river for the past 1,500 years. The tribal groups which mainly lived on the banks of the river are Bhatra, Halba, Gadba, Muriya, Gond and Dorla. There had also been archaeological sites belonging to the Jains and Hindus found in many of the river banks of Chhattisgarh, the sources added.
