Obesity can be treated by surgery, say experts
Kakinada | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

Obesity is a disease which can be treated effectively by surgical intervention, according to the experts.

Addressing a press conference here yesterday, Dr D V Ramakrishna, an expert in Laparoscopic Hepatobiliary Surgery, said ''Of late, obesity is recognised as a disease and is being treated by various modern methods. ''Ballooning of stomach to reduce its capacity and thereby bringing down the intake of food is the procedure commonly adopted,'' he said in the conference along with Gastroenterological Surgeon R Srinivasa Murthy and Radiologist Sarat.

''Since the ballooning is a temporary treatment, surgical procedures are also being adopted. Among the surgical procedures, the latest is the removal of stomach fat to the extent of 50 per cent. It is giving wonderful results and a person of 150 kg weight can reduce to 75 kg,'' they claimed.

Dr Ramakrishna opined though the surgical procedure is expensive, it is best for treating obesity. He said if left untreated, obesity would lead to several complications such as diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis and incontinence. Apollo Hospitals Medical Director C Suryaprakasarao said the obesity surgeries would be available at the Kakinada Hospital from the next year. He claimed the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery of the Apollo Hospitals Kakinada had been performing new advanced procedures and interventions for the past few years. Several ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatography) surgeries and advanced treatment of upper and lower GI bleed (Argon plasma coagulation) have been done at the hospital recently, he added.
