Centre, state responsible for Maoists menace: Gurudas
Kolkata | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta today held both the Centre and state government responsible for the growing Maoists' menace in the state.

''We are in favour of democracy. We are against Maoists activities and any form of violence. However, one should ponder why the tribals derailed themselves from the mainstream and opted for arms. This is beause both the Central and state governments have deprived them of their genuine rights,'' Mr Dasgupta said, while addressing the gathering in a conference organised by the Bengal Provincial Bank Employees' Association conference here.

He also criticised the UPA government's current economic policies that ''help'' big corporate houses, lead to ''price rise'' and cause ''disinvestment'' of public sector undertakings, apart from ''fuelling'' violation of labour laws, unemployment, job losses, banking sector reforms and delay in settlement of bank employees' wage revision.

All India Bank Employees' Association(AIBEA) general secretary C H Venkatachalam said an all-India bank strike would be observed jointly with the All India Bank Officerss Association (AIOBA) on December 16 in protest against the government's policies in this regard.

He said the bank employees would continue their struggle for pro-people banking policies and announced that more than one lakh employees would lead a procession to Parliament on December 3 jointly with the AIBOA.
