PNB snatch vital point from Air India in Nehru hockey

Punjab National Bank (PNB) continued to give an impressive display as they snatched a vital points from star-studded Air India by playing a one-all draw in their Group B quarter-final league match of the 46th Jindal Steel Nehru Senior Hockey Tournament here today.

It was PNBs second quarte-final league outing. In their first match, they had beaten Oil and Natural Gas Corportion. They will complete their league programme with a match against Army XI on November 23. Army XI also have so far won one match and drew one.

The Punjab National Bank team were the first to forge ahead against Air India in the 23rd minute when Ravinder scored a field goal. Four minutes before the first half, Air India, who had an upper hand throughout the match with a number of Olympians and internationals in their line-up, restored parity when Prabodh Tirkey converted a penalty corner. Air India forced five penalty corners in reply to PNBs two.

It was Air Indias second successive draw.

In a group A quarter-final league match Namdhari XI caused a mild upset as they defeated Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) with a 1-0 margin.

The all-important goal was scored by Gurvinder Singh in the 51st minute.

Punjab and Sind Bank should have won the match had they capitalised on the chances which came their way. They were awarded half a dozen penalty corners which they muffed. Namdharis got two penalty corners and they wasted both opportunities.

PSB suffered their first defeat in the quarter-final league phase.

In their opening league match, they had been beaten by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited. It was Namdharis first win out of two quarter-final league encounters. Tomorrows fixtures: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited vs Namdhari XI (3 pm) and Indian Oil Corporation vs Punjab and Sind Bank (5 pm).
