Hooda unveils 1857 memorial at university

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today said, First War of Independence-1857 was first ignited at Ambala and after nine hours it spread to Meerut and a number of people sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle of the country.

The Chief Minister was addressing a gathering after unveiling the memorial of Indias Freedom Struggle of 1857 at the campus of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) here.

Mr Hooda said, the youth of the country have derived inspiration from this revolution. The Chief Minister said, the memorial had been erected on the occasion of 150th anniversary of First War of Independence. He said, the memorial was dedicated to all those unsung heroes who sacrificed their lives for the freedom of the country. The Chief Minister said, concept of erection of memorial was approved by Vice-Chancellor, MDU, Dr R P Hooda. It was sculpted by Chakradhar Behra, an eminent artist from Orrisa.

On the occasion Mr Hooda, honoured Mr Behra by giving him Rs 11,000 and a shawl. He also honoured Mr Jagbir Rathee.
