India 'Safety of journalists is our priority', says Ramesh Bagve
Expressing his concern over the attacks on mediapersons and their organisations, Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagve today said his priority would be the safety of journalists. Addressing a press conference at the district police headquarters here, Mr Bagve said he had discussed the issue with Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Home Minister R R Patil and pressed for safety of journalists. He said said that a stringent act is on the anvil to punish those who attack the media. Commenting on the attacks on the IBN Lokmat office yesterday, he said that the Government would not spare the culprits. Mr Bagve said that Government would also not tolerate atrocities against women and dalits under any circumstances. In reply to a question, he admitted the shortage of police staff in the state and added that efforts are on to recruit about 1500 policemen. The state government would also provide modern weapons to the police department, he said.
