Biodiversity Research Centre to be set up in Silent Valley

Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh today said the proposed 'Biodiversity Research Centre' would be set up in Silent Valley.

Inaugurating a national seminar on the occasion of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Silent Valley National Park at Mundoor near here, he said Rs five crore would be sanctioned in the first phase for setting up the Research Centre.

The centre would start functioning from the next year, which would be named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he said.

He said the Centre would also provide Rs 225 crore for developing basic facilities of the Forest and Wild Life Departments in ten States in the country. Mr Ramesh also released a stamp to mark the silver jubilee celebrations.

Kerala Forest Minister Binoy Vishwam, Electricity Minsiter A K Balan also attended the function.

Several programmes, including seminars, honouring of environmental campaigners and visits to the Silent Valley have been planned to mark the occasion.

One of the world's rarest surviving rainforests and a treasure house of biodiversity, the Silent Valley was declared as a National Park on November 15, 1984. The Silent Valley was dedicated to the nation by former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in September 1985.
