Raids in Punjab to check video piracy
Chandigarh | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

On a tip-off from The Indian Music Industry (IMI), Punjab Police conducted a raid at seven different locations in cities like Chandigarh, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Batala and seized a massive amount of pirated material, mobile memory chips, CDs, MP3s, DVDs, VCDs and other material over the last couple of days, IMI release said here today.

Police have seized three dozens of memory cards, 5980 pirated CDs, five computers with DVD writers and memory cards. Seven accused involved in the piracy are arrested so far.

Police have recovered titles and MP3s of various hit movies like Raaz, Dostana, Boot Polish, Singh is King, Aasma, Welcome, Hello, Jawani, Kismat Konnection, Zehar, Gangster and other movies.

Piracy has been evolving and expanding its footprints in India.

According to IMI, physical format of piracy alone dents a loss of Rs 600 crores annually to Indian Music Industry.

Music Industry is today witnessing new formats of piracy such a Mobile Chip Piracy which roughly estimates a loss of another Rs 300 crore. In order to minimise these losses, IMI has recently launched a new exchange, Music Mobile Exchange (MMX). A shopkeeper can become legitimate to download music in the external memory (mobile chips) by opting for the MMX licence. Commenting on the raid, Savio D'Souza, Secretary General, IMI, said, ''IMI is committed to its fight against piracy and would ensure the protection of the Indian music industry which is suffering from huge losses because of piracy that not only hurts the commercial interests of licensed manufacturers but also has the potential of damaging the country's economic and social fabric''.
