Attack on IBN was spontaneous : Shiv Sena
Mumbai | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut today said ''the attack on the offices IBN network channels in Mumbai and Pune news channels was spontaneous.'' In an interview to a TV channel, Raut said the IBN had been critical of Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray and that was intolerable to his party. Raut, who is also Executive Editor of Senas newspaper Saamna, said, ''Media is not God -- criticism of Balasaheb Thackeray will not be tolerated, and criticism of Sena is also criticism of Marathi Manoos.'' A group of 20-25 Shiv Sena activists attacked journalists and damaged property at the offices of IBN7 and IBN Lokmat, the Hindi and Marathi news channels of the IBN Network, in north-east Mumbais Vikhroli today.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil said the state government will provide security to all the major media houses in Mumbai.

Mr Patil said if the arrested agitators are granted bail, police will arrest them under the Indian Penal Code 150-1/C.

Condemning the attack in strong words, the Home Minister said the culprits would face stringent action which will ensure that such incidents do not recur. Regarding the compensation, Mr Patil said he would study the damage and a suitable decision will be taken.
