Andhra-MP Ranji tie ends in draw as host top order collapses

Andhra top order batsmen fell like nine-pins in its first innings in reply to Madhya Pradesh score of 308 for 5 declared, even as the match ended in a tame draw in the group 'B' Plate Division of the four-day Ranji Trophy match concluded at Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation(IGMC) Stadium here today.

Andhra, which started its innings before lunch lost their top order four batsmen for a paltry 30 runs.

The first to go in the second over was opener and Andhra vice-captain L N Prasad Reddy, who was adjudged leg before to T Sudhindra when he failed to open his account. One-down batsman A S K Varma joined his opening partner H H Vatekar and both took the score to seven when the latter was run out for four.

The former Team India batsman Y Venugopal Rao joined Varma and took the score to 15 before Varma, who made eight, was bowled lock, stock and barrel by Anand Rajan. The next to go was Venugopal, when he was caught by Anand Rajan off the bowling of off-spinner Ankit Sarma for eight. The wicket-keeper V Manoj Sai pushed the score to 79 by adding 49 runs with skipper Sumanth for the fifth wicket. All rounder K S Shabuddin and Sumanth took the sixth wicket partnership to 47 runs and by the time Shabuddin got out, the score board read 126.

Sumanth, however, continued his run spree with an unbeaten half-century, studded with three fours, following his century in the first match against Kerala. He and G Sankar Rao with 16 were at the creased when the match ended an hour behind the schedule due to rain.

Ankit was the successful bowler for the visitors, when he took two wickets by conceding only 40 runs off 26 oves. T Sudhindra, Anand Rajan and Abbas Ali bagged a wicket each.

Earlier, Madhya Pradesh resuming their overnight score of 272 for four declared their innings at 308 for five. The overnight batsman S Abbas Ali added 22 runs to his score and completed his half-century.

He remained unbeaten with 57 when the innings was declared. Andhra increased its points tally to four (one point from this match) from its two matches while Madhya Pradesh had increased its points to three (one point from this match) from three matches.
